The noise could be from either the DD throwout bearing, or the TA planet gears & bearings. The planetary repair is a much bigger job. I'd suggest pulling the drain plug at the rearend to check for moisture, and also the center plug (at the bottom of the rear split area) to check for metal bits. The throwout bearing is in a dry compartment. The planetary can be exprensive to repair.
