The shock is there simply to take the recoil out of the spring. So you don't get the pogo stick effect. A new shock won't make the spring compress less. You might want to try a set of those coil spring spacers in your seat spring. Back in 1954 there weren't too many 300 lb farmers.
IH did make a heavy duty spring, recommended for foperators over 200 pounds.

Hi Gordo! I'm glad to know mine aren't the only unique shock mounts. Yes, the spring on my tractor is fine; it does not bottom out with me. It is just that the shock is worn completely out. It does not dampen in either direction - it should dampen more on expansion than compression, but as I mentioned - it feels worn out and bone dry.... Good to hear from you. mike
