IH supplied seat springs for three different weights of operator. The top ring of the spring will have: 3 identifying notches for light weight operator. 4 identifying notches for medium weight operator or 5 identifying notches for heavy weight operator. It is a simple matter to remove your spring and count the notches. If you don't have the one for the heavy weight operator it will be too weak. (Even if you are light weight...I know. I am 180 lbs and I've replaced the springs on my C,H,M&300. No shocks were replaced.) I'm almost sure that all the replacement springs now are for the heavy weight operator...maybe no notches at all any more. Lot of rambling, hope this helps. John
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't have a problem with the spring. It is not bottoming out with me in the seat. My shock is totally worn and there is no dampening effect left in it. I just want to replace the shock so that the "bounce" comes to an end more quickly when I go over a rough spot. mike

To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
