Check your oil level before spliting the tractor. When I bought my C I had a similar situation. I managed to drain an excess gallon of engine oil out. The previous owner obviously had no idea how to check it. My leak then slowed to a minimum and has been getting better every time I use it. The seal must be somewhat drying up or something. Give it a shot first.
