Not a stupid question at all. If the cultivators are adjustable, rows probably have to be between 30 and 36 inches. At my farm we have gone from 36 inch rows for field corn planting to 30 inch. In that situation, its not the row width but how many seeds you plant per acre. You plant the same amount regardless of the width. Garden wise is the same. If you get the rows too close, then your yield per plant, for example in green beans, will suffer per plant.
