1st thing, you need 12vdc at the positive side of the coil, don't know why you would have a resistor in a Kohler engine. They are not required. Do you have a plug wire that is wire cored and not a car plug wire? you should have 12vdc at the neg side of coil every time the points close. You need a VOA meter to test it correctly, not a test light. Jim
