talked to a deere "expert" and he said that since there was a factory installed knockout where the 540 stub shoulda been; that means the tractor was a factory 1000 pto only and i would have to change out the internals for the pto because nothing in there was set up for 540(A rare bird apparently)...hence the 800 bucks...which was for used parts of course and i considered it but wasnt sure what i would end up with not to mention the 800 was just a ballpark...could get more maybe. IDK I guess the 4020 normqally come setup for 540 and 1000...just have to swap the shaft, but this was a 1000 only from the factory????

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
