The 4020 you looked at was a rare bird. Most did switch from 540 to 1000 by switching the stub shaft. Drive the nose into a ditch to minimize fluid loss. Squeeze and remove the snap sing on the shaft with a pair of pliers. Pull the old shaft out and slide the new one in. Re install the snap ring. Switching the shafts causes the speed change internally on the tractor. If you can borrow a 540 stub shaft from somewhere it should be a 5 minute check to see if the change can be made.
I don't know what baler and MoCo you want to use, but is the 656 big enough for the job?

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
