Hello,

A friend of mine called up and asked me to help him advertise his tractor for sale. I went to look at the tractor, and try to figure out just exactly what it was that he had. To me, it apppears to be a Farmall M. He thinks it is a Super M because when he rebuilt the engine, the pistons from an M were too small, and he had to order pistons that were 1/8" (?) bigger in diameter. The pistons that worked, were listed as being for a Super M. So far, I have found out that:

* A Super M first came out in 1951. His serial number is 225805X1. The archive list does not have M in the Farmall section, so the year of his tractor is still unknown, and cannot help at this point.

* Looking in the Nebraska Tractor Tests, it appears that the Super M medallion is more squarish than the previous M's. This indicates that he may have an M. The book also mentioned that the pistons were indeed a bit larger in a Super M.

* The white round decal on his does not say Super M. The photo section of YTMag has some Super M's but they all say so on the decal.

* My friend thought that the power steering also made it a Super M. I believe that the Behlen unit was aftermarket, but am not certain of this.

Although I have a Farmall H, I mostly know the green brands, and am in unfamiliar territory here. Could anybody shed some light on what he may have?

Thank you,
Greg
