Well Gordo lets start with FINE tuning her first if ya want to try and run with the BIG DOGS First i would start with scyning the gov. to the carb , Firs remove the cove with the little line coming off of it on the up wright tube coming off the gov. housing . This gives you access to the rod next remove the side cover on the gov.Now you have access to all that ya need to tinker with . Fallow what i tell ya here hook up all you linkage. Place the throttle lever in the max wide open , next on the linkage coming up off the gov. to the throttel shaft that goes to the carb remove the headed pin and hold the shaft to it's wide open position and see if the headed pin will slide into the hole with ease , if it does not the adjust the clevis till it will then add one half turn more and reinstall the headed pin . Next look at all the linkage inside the gov.and you will see the gov spring and you will see the adjustment bolt and nut that limits it just back that off a half dozen turns for starters . Now here is something else to look at look real close and see how the spring fits into the linkage if there is a lot of slop in the arm holes then the bushing are gone as tis spring should have a nice snug fit with out any slop , this will need to be addressed at some point in time as i have rebuilt so many that i lost count a long time ago. As i have a buddy that is a clock maker and i have him rebush them for me as we did his S/MTA many years ago and we made bushing out of bearing broonze and and pressed them into his gov. arms made a whole new tractor out of it . Now after ya have that adjustments done lets move on to fine tunen the carb now this is a feel thing along with a good ear and the fingers of a surgon Ya start by backing down the curb idle to as low as ya can and adjust the idle mixture to the best ya can get then back the curb down somemore and do it all over again i can get them to run down as low as 400 then set it to spec.'s and then check engine timing now here this can be anything from a total of 27 degrees on up to 35-38 degrees if it never had the up date kit installed into the dist . , As they will lug better with the kit where total advance is limited to 27-29 degrees at full throttle. Oh forgot on the main jet setting myself i put five to six turns off the seat. Good luck and have fun.
