There are two castle nuts with cotterpins on the right side of the tranny. The top one is the shaft that holds/supports the shifting forks for the gear shift lever. The bottom one is on the transmission shaft that holds the reverse, 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. The nut you are referring to holds the shaft in place. The other end is held in place by a bearing locking plate on the inside of the transmission. I have never adjusted one and I think, I say think, you would be able to turn it (the shaft) if the gearshift was in neutral and the rear wheels were off of the ground, because this shaft has the gears in constant contact with the differential case.
