The copper is the bonding material between the bearing material and the steel backing. If you can see the copper the bearing is worn out.
In the 70's and early 80's there were many bearings made with nickel as the bonding material. These bearings are bad news since the nickel proved to be too hard and greatly increased crankshaft wear as the bearings became worn.
