Just read "Reading and Remembering" with interest. To answer a few of the questions. I was ask to restore this tractor, having done one of my own, but apparently the owner didn't trust me with the engine. He took it to one shop where it was torn down and abandoned. Hauled it to the shop that rebuilt it in pieces and it was "rebuilt" internally. Outside still covered with grease, dirt, and rust. I discovered the fracture while wire brushing the block.When cleaned up, one can distinctly see where a large pipe or round rod has struck the block---caving it in. I too, feel that this should have been discovered when the sleeves were pulled. Now I'm left to try to salvage this whole mess.
