I'm getting ready to put the road gear on my F14. I pulled the input shaft out of the front of the trans and compared the gears on it to the gears on the road gear.
Rut-ro, Rastro...
There are two gears involved here: The bevel gear that meshes with the transmission mainshaft, and right behind that a spur gear that runs the PTO shaft. On the road gear, both are about a half-inch larger in diameter with a different tooth count.
Fortunately, the feller I got the road gear from knows more about the situation than I do and sent the transmission mainshaft along with the road gear, so I've got that covered.
It's been several years since I had the transmission cover off . My question is, can I unbolt the bearing carrier on the rear of the PTO, pull the shaft partway out and slide the gear off the other end to change it, or am I going to have to pull the entire PTO shaft out?
If I have to pull the whole shaft, how much of the trans do I have to take apart to get to it?
