706 with glow plugs? Sounds like you have a D282.
Best way to use ether in a glow plug engine is DON"T. Unless you like the idea of an overhaul to replace busted pistons, broken rings, and ckacked head!!!!!!!!!!.
A D282 with good compression and all six glow plugs working and two GOOD batteries will start.
If you have been using ether to start for a long time, best plan on an overhaul.
