Gary: The transmission is in two gears at same time, from your description, most likely 3rd and 4th. Do as others have said, remove shift lever and line uo shift rails. Then before you put lever back, build up the end so it nicely fills a notch on one rail. Grind it smooth rounded a bit on corners, until it shifts easy.
Notice I said build up lever before you reinstall, a 560 has the ability to break gears and bend shafts. Believe me, I've been there and done that. It's not a pretty sight when you take top off transmission.
