Just to follow up with the story for anyone interested in how it turned out. I took off the shifter as suggested and the left rail was forward, which to my way of thinking put the tractor in 5th gear. I slid it back to neutral and looked over the notches in the rails and the end of shifter for wear (surprisingly little). I decided to try it again without welding and grinding, but if it happens again, I'll get more aggressive. The whole area was lacking in lube so I treated it to a healthy dose of grease. I don't know if that could have contributed to the problem in the first place. Thanks for all the great advice guys. This forum is the greatest thing that ever happened for guys with old tractors!!!
