Thanks for the replies, photos, and suggestions. I'm splitting the tractor (240U) for the purpose of replacing the rear main seal. Faced with severe oil burning I pulled the pistons out for new rings (found 2 broken oil rings), and in so doing I discovered all of the bearings are down to the copper layer. And since I've gone that far I felt it would be shortsighted not to replace the rear main seal. A few friends who have split tractors suggested I simply support and move the rear via a floor jack, but I just don't feel comfortable doing that. Guess I'm just over cautious.
