Good for you, for involving your son in this project! I had a father who never involved any of us in anything, who never taught anything he knew unless he was asked point blank, who went off by himself whenever he could, who didn't want his kids to join him on the farm when he grew up. We all eventually got to feel this rejection. Kids gain self-confidence from sharing jobs with their parents, and they love being included in the work of the farm, family, or what have you. Having a goal to share is wonderful and exciting, too (but I certainly wouldn't force this on any kid). I would, by the way, assume that a girl could get just as excited by learning to do things well, and by the promise of eventually having the chance to drive a machine that she helped make go. My wife gets nervous if she has do something as simple as pulling a 9-volt battery from a transistor radio. She never had any experience with "let's look at this and figure out how it works so we can get it apart and back together again." I guess we guys who grew up around electric motors, light switches, gas engines, magnetos, carbs, piston rings, clutches, and on and on, are lucky that this has given us the confidence to tackle jobs that sometimes require some analysis first--and maybe the chance to goof up the job. I'd love to see that confidence passed on to the young ladies, too.
