One more note yet: Thinking about this further, I don't think the tractor will even run with no field to the alternator (it would if you had a gen&magneto like I do). Probably a better way to check is to see if there is any charging current flowing in the battery charging line from the alternator back to the ammeter and battery. You mentioned that you have 14 volts at the battery terminals when they are disconnected. This makes me think that you do have good voltage output from your alternator. Sounds to me like everything is working like it should, except for the mysterious discharge while the tractor is running. You could try the archives under "conversion" to read several years worth of discussion on this topic.
One personal bit of experience: 90% of electrical problems are caused by loose wires and dirt (which absorbs moisture and acts as a ground). Other than making sure everything is good and tight, and that you have continuity in all your wires, I'm out of ideas. Good luck.
