They are pretty simple boxes the verticle shaft with the spiral groove (Worm) runs in two ball type bearings at the ends. The sector (The plate with the pin which sticks into the groove) is also simple. The main issues are four. The worm shaft bearings go bad and allow the shaft to go up and down. (read slack in steering) The groove can be wallowed outallowing pin movement in the groove. The sector following pin (with bearing on some of the types like this) go bad and wobble in the groove. The steering arm can be loose on the splines.
