Pat, I don't know of a way to tell if it is the injection pump lip seal is leaking without replacing it but I believe that is the only place Diesel fuel can get into the crankcase unless there is an injector stuck open but you would be loosing power & blowing raw fuel out the exhaust. You will not be able to see the leak with the pump off. This is a common problem with the old Bosch injection pumps and the new low sulphur Diesel fuel. The lip seal is lubed by the Diesel fuel and the lubricity of the new low sulphur fuel is much less. Solution is Diesel fuel conditioner or a tablespoon of crankcase oil added to the fuel tank at every fill up. Hints, make sure everything is clean around the pump, when you remove a fuel line or injector line cap both ends off. Require a seal puller, becareful not to scratch the drive shaft where the seal rides, I like to put seal lubricant on seal and drive shaft, use a deep socket of appropriate size to install the seal, make sure seal is seated properly. My brother & I replaced one on his 454 about 5 years ago and seal was about $8.00 CND. Re oil coming out the breather pipe, we had a 674 with D-239 for a short time before trading for 684. When we had 674 if you were on a steep hill or side hill with breather pipe down oil would run out the breather. 684 with D-239 does not leak oil, IH Dealer said there was a change to breather pipe of filter on breather pipe. So when you are at the Dealer you may want to ask about breather pipe change.
