I think that you will find that you do not have coolant circulating through the convertor/regulator. After 10 minutes of running the without coolant flow the convertor will be so cold that it can no longer vaporize the fuel and the engine will flood out causing the sputtering and backfire.
If your antifreeze is not strong enough the coolant may be freezing in the convertor. You can try starting it on vapor only until it is warmed up.
