You say its now 12 volts, first thing that comes to mind is you are still using a 6 volt coil !!!!!! If so it will run very hot and eventually burn up and open becaase at 12 volts its drawing twice its intended current, in which case the points will also burn up prematurely.
The easiest thing would be to buy a full true 12 volt coil (NO ballast required) and use it. Of course, you could use a 6 volt coil plus an in line series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor, but why do all that and have the extra expense plus extra connections to go bad UNLESS you rig a ballast by pass system for starting only which yields a good hot starting spark.
NOTE the coil is also somewhat polarity sensitive, so at Neg groudn wire its lil + terminal to the ignition switch and its other lil - to the distributor.
