My "41H has started smoking intermittently. Its either the rings or valve guides, based on the fact the engine still pulls strong and doesn"t miss - it just blow smokes at me on and off - it doesn"t seem to make a lot of difference in load.
The tractor S/N has an X3 designation, which suggests distillate. I"ve run it on 87 octane for the last 10 years. Don"t think the engine was ever rebuilt or replaced, but if there"s a way to tell when I open the engine up, please share..
I"m leaning toward the valves, and was wondering what the collective thoughts are about head jobs - I"m used to automotive heads where I"d put in hardened seats, new guides, valves, and possibly springs (if it would be a performance engine).
Comment? Suggestions? Know of any good machine shops within 50 miles of Hartford, CT?
