Most likely your shifter lever is worn, not that hard of a fix.
There is a pin that holds the lever to the casting that needs to be removed. Some will have metal caps to keep the pin in place, some can be pried off, otherwise just drive a punch into one side and the other side will pop off.
Your shifter should look like the pic below, if not, it will need to be built up.
