I recently bought a John Deere 9 shank heavy duty ripper. I use my IH 3588 for heavy field work but I suspect this might be too much even though my Snoopy has a very strong motor and clutch (new). I was thinking about removing several of the shanks to be able to go deeper into the hardpan. Our Georgia land is flat and mostly medium soil but there are several areas of compacted hard pan that I would like to bust up. Any suggestions on the number of shanks that would be appropriate for the 3588 so I don"t overstress the tractor in the difficult spots. I have heard from other farmers who stopped their tractors cold (150-180hp) when they unexpectedly ripped into the hard stuff.
