The clunking sound was probably the thrust ball bearings on the bolster shaft.
Lot"s of wear on the bolster shaft occurs thru the years, not just the bronze sleeve. What I did to mine when I rebuilt my 40 H was to have the bolster shaft welded up, then I turned it down to just nicely fit the worn bushing that was in the housing. I allowed around .005 play. That bushing is not easy to get out.
