I think you gave him the best answer you could, which is buying from his competitors in the future. You also did him a favor (most customers don't) by letting him know why and giving him a chance to correct the situation. The guy just doesn't have enough horsepower between his ears to recognize a customer relations problem even when he gets his nose rubbed in it.
I concluded long ago it's a waste of time to argue with idiots, because they're not smart enough to know when they've lost. It saves me time almost every day! :)
