The wire to the points and the ground tab on coil have to disconnected to check it. Points wire to the center secondary output button should read no more than 12,000 ohms max secondary resistance. More than that or no reading at all it"s bad. Then from the points to the ground tab on side of the coil no more than .4 ohms max primary resistance. Again more or nothing it"s bad. You may get decent readings there and the coil could still be bad because of windings or insulation breaking down inside that only be checked on a coil tester that does a load heat firing test. Same readings also work for the IH H4 magneto.
