I have been reading the messages in this forum for some time now and gleaning as much information as I can. I have inherited a TD9 with a blade and winch. It has been in our family for many years and I have a lot of fond memories of my Dad operating this machine. My son and I would like to get it operational. It has been sitting in a machine shed for approx. 10 yrs. I would appreciate guidance and information on the things to do and check before starting the engine after such a long down-time. I operated it a little when I was younger, but other than minor service maintenance my ‘hands-on’ mechanical knowledge of the machine is very weak. Our intentions are to get it running again on gas and then enlist more serious help in preparation for diesel operation and then into working condition. To date: We shot some Marvel’s in each cylinder and let it soak about a week - turned it over with the starter - plugs were out - the top end looks good - no rust - everything moving normal as near as we can tell. We started next with the ignition system - no fire at the plugs or points. As best I can tell it has the original mag with a Bosch automotive type coil substitution. We cleaned and set the points to .020, checked out the condenser and coil with an ohm meter - as we would an automotive system. The primary to secondary coil ratio seemed a little low - .5 to 8K - and the condenser took a charge from the meter, deflecting at very high resistance both ways. Anyway, we buttoned it up and still no fire - ran a test light though the system and was surprised to find juice all the way to the points (points were closed) - burnished the points with a piece of heavy paper - turned it over and got a blue-green spark at the points. Went to the fuel system next - gas tank empty but clean - sediment bowl had a ration of varnish-jelly in the bottom - plan next to clean the fuel tank, lines and carb. - put in fresh oil and try to light it off. For ref: The serial no. is TDCB26087T7CM and the block is stamped TDCBM17884, w/casting no. 9.12.P. The head has been replaced (casting no. 8101-DF) as I remember the original being warped. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give us. Dave and Ben Morris

Pitfalls of Tractor Engine Rebuilds - by Chris Pratt. The first pop after you have put the machine together with your own hands is exciting and pleasing. The whole experience can be marred if one moves too fast and makes too many assumptions that they can just use "as is" some parts they should be closely scrutinizing and possibly attended to. In such cases, rework makes what could have been a fun project turn into an irritant or even a nightmare. Minor Irritants To give you an example of an minor but irritating proble
