Never been around a TD-9 but have experience with WD-9 and engine is the same. I would clean the diesel fuel system too and place new filters in that system before even trying to start it on gas. Get a service manual if you don't already have one. Many answers will be found there. Once you have it running properly on gas and assuming the diesel fuel system has been cleaned and bled, there is no reason to "hold back" on "kickin er over" to diesel operation! Besides it won't run very long on gas since that is just a small tank for starting and warmup.
