Most crops compensate for population. Here row crops are planted in 30 inch rows. 44 inches is probably due more to tradition than anything else. So, you have a spacing equivalent to 1 row every 22 inches. If you are short on water, perhaps you should have cut the seeding rate in half to get the same population as in the one 44 inch row. With adequate water you may get more peas, but it won't be twice as many, maybe 10-25% more, since 44" rows are pretty wide.
