I still don't own it but it now resides permanently in my barn. Ernie told me the battery was down and I would have to hand crank it. The starter is not cranking at all. This is still a 6 volt, positive ground system. First thing I did was stick the charger on there. The battery was all the way up! I hand cranked it, without the charger, and she started immediately. The rebuilt generator from 2 years ago was charging at around 10 amps with the switch in high charge position. I have it isolated to three probable causes. 1. Rusty starter switch contacts. It appears original. 2. Cable from the starter switch to the starter looks original and wrapped in duct tape. 3. Starter appears original. It may have been rebuilt once but it is hard telling. Next time I am out, I will hook a jumper cable on the starter post and hit the battery post. If the starter doesn't turn, I have a rebuilt ready to install. If the starter turns, then I have the problem isolated to the switch and the cable. Next I plan to clean the starter switch and try to crank. If no response, then I have the problem isolated to the cable. I'll let you know what the culprit(s) are. It may be a combination of all 3.
