Yo Jimbo, I agree with you and myself lol Yep a direct battery connection to the FLD terminal causes a very high current to flow through the field relay contacts which normally switch only a few amps. However if they welded shut as you mentioned (and no other harmful affects) that should make her always charge at high charge similar to when we dead ground the FLD for diagnostics YET SHE SHOULD STILL CHARGE (if all else okay). BUTTTTTT if the current (when he jumped FLD to BAT) was too high it may have burned the field circuit OPEN thereby the gennys Field NEVER sees the ground needed to charge, Id say thats more apt to be what ruined the VR (a burned open winding) then its contacts got welded shut, although either still ruins the VR and BOTH may have resulted........Im only saying if all that happened was the contacts welded she ought to still charge but if the winding also opened NO CHARGE, NO TICKY NO LAUNDRY LOL
