With the exception of my track loader, I have changed all my equipment (trucks, combine, tractors) to a single battery. I do try to match or exceed the original combined amps of the two batteries being replaced. I am not in an area where the winter temp drops severely. In switching to a single battery you reap several benefits. A single large high amp battery costs less than two batteries. You have a reduction in the number of connections to corrode and maintain. The charging system regulator can sense the condition of the single battery and charge it for optimum charge. (With two batteries, the voltage regulator senses the condition of the better battery and cuts back as it is charged leaving the second battery undercharged.) It is essential to buy high amp quality batteries regardless. Battery data sheets are not necessarily correct. Many overstate the amps! I never buy discount batteries for anything but the lawnmower and there I use a larger size. Low amp batteries will cause more starter and solenoid failure than any other cause due to the current rising (heat) as the voltage drops. My 986 cranked all winter just fine off the single 1130 amp Deka battery I installed. It fits the original battery box.

Experimental Tractors Article - by Danny Bowes (Dsl). Tractor technology appears to have nearly hit it's pinnacle of development. If you agreed with the subtitle, you are rather mistaken. Quite, actually. As a matter of fact, some of the technology experimented with over 40 years ago makes today's tractor technology seem absolutely stale by comparison. Experimentation, from the most complex assembly to the most simple and mundane component, is as an integral a part of any farm tractor's development
