In the long run, I don't think that makes any big difference. But I'm not an EE, so I don't know for sure. Maybe JohnT or Bob M will spot this thread and jump in and baile me out or set me straight on this, which is only speculation on my part. Only thought I have on that is that it MIGHT rob you of a couple of pieces of information you could get from watchin' your ammeter. 1) How much current your starter is drawing when engaged -- too much might indicate a bad battery connection on either side??? 2) Letting you know that the starter is still engaged and drawing current after the tractor is running???
I'll offer up Bob M's very helpful wiring diagrams to guide you. Your conversion will be a hybrid of Diagrams 4 and 5 on the link. Diagram 4 shows quite clearly how the mag is isolated from everything else. Diagram 5 is a good one to follow for all the wiring all around and among the alternator, battery and starer. All you'd have to drop from that for a magneto ignition is the battery power forward to a battery ignition coil.
Only other thought on this question is why not run the wire from the ammeter over to the hot stud on the starter? It's a short run of small wire, negligible expense for the large eye ringlet terminal on the starter end. Coming back to me not bein' an EE, I've gotta think there's a reason they took the hot to the ammeter off of there instead of directly off the battery.
