Edit note: I posted this on "Modern View" but it did not cross over to "Classic". I noticed that mkirsch has the same problem. I guess that I will only post in "classic" from now on. This problem has happened a few times before. The site's software needs to be corrected.
-------------------------------------
I think part of the confusion comes from the word "housing". Both Dave and IH use the same word for the cast iron distributer mount and the pot metal or aluminum tach gear sleeve.
I can't understand why IH used the multifunction distributer mount (distributer plus provisiions for tach drive) on my W-400 (serial #1728) when they built zero W-400's with a tach. Guy Fay confirms this by not listing the tach on the W-400 but including it with the W-450. I also don't understand why I have a small knockout in the shroud (similar to a 1/2" NPT slug in an electrical junction box). That knockout is positioned perfectly for a tach cable running to a steering column mounted tach.
The tach drive opening is covered with a delete plate. I am guessing there is only a machined void/hole behind it. That should mean no wear. I have a Bridgeport and I am assuming that 369 365 R91 could be installed in that hole after modifications. I would hope that those modifications would be self evident.
But I am still hung up on placing the tach. Sure would like to see a picture or factory documentation showing the installation on the left side of shroud. I could probably go to the next 50 RPRUs and not see a W-400/450 with a tach. Of course, because I am 65 years old now I probably wouldn't give a damn as the last of the 50 meetings approached.
FWIW, my TC-55A with correction # 1 was published in 1-31-58
Terry,
How about a picture of your tach installed on your W-450? If you are not familiar with photo hosting sites, just upload to "tractor Photos" here at YT.
