That "Oh Yeah" about an 8 volt battery you added at the end IS KIND OF IMPORTANT ya know.
If you have any old fashion mom n pop type of genny starter repair shops, they can tweak/adjust a factory 6 volt Voltage Regulator to better charge an 8 volt battery. Thats my suggestion.
YOU ASK Is it mis matched?? YES but it can still work and work better if adjusted for an 8 volt battery.
Is it mis matched?? Again yes to some extent, many of the late Chinese after market VR's are more generic one size fits all UNLIKE a more correct genny to VR closer match as original.
Is it mis matched?? Again SOME VR's are suitable for Pos or Neg Ground, while others are for POS or NEG ONLY so that could be another issue.
BOTTOM LINE: If its well grounded and if it ONLY charges if you dead ground the FLD post, its EITHER a VR problem (bad or mis match),,,,,,,,Or VR isnt well grounded,,,,,,,,,,Or the wires bad form FLD on Genny to FLD on VR
