Pete, this is one of those "take it apart, see what's wrong, and fix it" situations. Nobody's going to be able to tell you with any degree of accuracy what's wrong with your tractor.
My best guess is that the "squallin'" is the throwout bearing. The return spring keeps the throwout bearing from contacting the pressure plate and spinning all the time. This is what the clutch pedal free travel is for. Free travel is the gap between the throwout bearing and the pressure plate.
When the spring broke, presumably the pedal fell forward, causing the throwout to run against the pressure plate all the time. The bearing eventually overheated and cooked the lube out.
As for why it locked up, that's anybody's guess. It could be the throwout disintegrated and bound up the shaft. It could be a totally unrelated problem.
