6V 140 electrical question

Hi all,

I have a similar on a 6V 140. When my regulator is uncovered and the tractor is off, one set of points remains open,but the other is closed - should they *both* be open?? Also, when the tractor is running, and I remove the battery ground cable, the tractor quits. Any thoughts?
