When the battery is disconnected at a battery post on a running gas tractor and the engine dies, normally the charging circuit is not working. With a volt meter you need to record the battery voltage without the tractor running. Then crank the engine and take the same measurement. The running engine at fast idle should have a higher voltage by approximately 1 1/2 volts. If the voltage does not rise the system is not charging.
