IH W$ Charging the battery

My old W4 came with the battery hooked straight to the starter (Delco-Remy Model # 1107448, but not to the charging system which is a Delco-Remy generator Model # 1101355 with what looks like a regulator sitting on top. The regulator is wired to the generator, but no wires go to either the ammeter below the steering wheel or the battery. The regulator has two tongues marked "Bat" and "L". Can anyone tell me what thickness and color wire goes where, assuming that I'll want the ammeter hooked up as well. Much appreciated. Mahkel
