Barry - On your setup you'd use the "L" terminal only to feed the light switch, if your tractor has lights. (So if your your tractor is without lights nothing gets hooked onto "L"...) There was a change from a simple generator cutout to a voltage regulator I think about 1952. (The generators however remained unchanged.) Quick way to tell: Look at the light switch. If it has 4-positions (L-H-D-B) it's the earlier, cutout-equipped system. The newer regulator-equipped tractors have a 3-position (O-D-B) light switch.
