I'm not going to dispute what you said, but it sounds like the engine was due for an overhaul, anyway. The temperature gauges on the tractors I drove were pretty accurate. Book says normal operating range is in the center of the green. Many times ours would creep over to the red, and eventually start to blow water out the overflow (pressurized). To prevent that I would have to shift down a gear. My dad emphasized "watch your gauges", so I did. In other words you should be able to monitor the temperature and reduce the load (probably hard to do when grinding feed if you ever want to get done grinding feed). Yes heat caused by overloading can cause a lot of damage, and the use of cheap engine kits probably is partially responsible for the damage. As I implied in an earlier post, it depends on what you are using the tractor for. Probably better off if IH had not used that truck engine. I imagine they saw the coming of more diesel engines and did not want to develop a new gas engine to use only a few years.
