The coolant did not overheat. When I hopped on the tractor the heat gauge was in the normal range, and yes the gauge works. The cast pistons themselves absorb to much heat, expand and seize. It happens very rapidly. At the time I didn't know what caused it 'pre computer'. I talked to the dealer mechanic who had done the overhaul with CASEIH parts and his first question was what fuel had I been running. I got a quick education on modern gasoline and IH 6 bang gassers! Before it happened the tractor had only unrolled hay in the winter and with 900 hours the engine was tight and burned no oil so it was not due for an overhaul.
