If the valve cover is straight and true, and the mating surface of the head is also straight and true, then the ONLY reason you would need any kind of sealer would be to keep the gasket in place while you install the valve cover.
If by chance there is a nick or two in the gasket surface on the head, a little dab of silicon gasket maker will cure it.
It might also be possible there is a stress crack in the valve cover.
