Again, you're on the right track. The slot on the rear side of the bracket holds that nut captive, until it gets loose enough to wobble, then you'll have to snake a wrench onto it. The loosening is done with the hex on the spindle. Not sure what the difference might be but I've run into them both ways, with enough gap to get a standard wrench onto the hex, and others that need a tappet wrench to get in there. I do know the one I have that needs the tappet wrench is a 13/16". Can't remember if the others, that take a regular wrench, are 3/4 or 7/8, but I do know they're 1/16 off the other one. Whether you wind up buyin' a wrench or grindin' one down, it'd be a good idea to slip a caliper down in there to measure up for the right size.
