I have talked to engine builders who have witnessed the seats destroyed by this, but it is not that common but CAN happen. IT is not a scam. It is an insurance policy. The hardened seats prevent the seats from over heating and small amounts of metal sticking to the valves. This will slowly destroy the seat and valves with little pits in each. Also the lead lubricates the valves to prevent sticking in the guides. I do not know if the tolerances were tight and needed the lubrication or if it just helped but it can't hurt. With an older motor these are worn and sticking is unlikely. If you are running a flathead motor, i.e. cub or such, it is not as crucial since if a valve sticks it will not hit a piston. With an overhead valve motor you run a slightly higher risk since the piston could contact the valve IF it were to hit. I don't use the additive but used to when I ran these machines harder. Bottom line!!! IT CAN'T HURT
