Marvin - If the battery is boiling over, it's being overcharged. Try running with the light switch on the "L" setting. If it's working right the ammeter should show only 3 or 4 amps at full RPM (vs 12 to 15 amps when set on "H"). Your charging system has only a cutout relay. (Charge current regulation is left up the operator via the light switch.) If the ammeter shows on the + side with the engine running at speed, and reads 0 with the engine off, the cutout is working OK. As for protecting the battery box from acid spills, I once saw where a guy took a plastic marine battery box and sawed the handles off it. It then neatly slipped into the tractor box and acted like a corrosion proof liner. The trick is to find the right size plastic box! You can find them at K-Mart or a discount marine store.
